And if Duran Duran makes it to the list before these guys, I will probably have an apoplectic fit.

You know a great band when a deep cut from a lesser rated album still sounds this entrancing and novel.Īs much as I like Devo, which is a lot, I think I would as likely place OMD on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee list. For instance, Junk Culture, panned by some critics, still offered the outstanding Talking Loud and Clear, as well as Locomotion and Tesla Girls, with a real sleeper and my favorite from the album being Love and Violence (video below). The band surely had some great albums before that, with Dazzle Ships being my favorite, but even their less regarded records contained not just a few good songs but true gems at that. It is hard to fathom why the American audience didn't latch on to OMD earlier than the appearance of If You Leave in Pretty in Pink. These guys never tried to be fashionable, like Duran Duran or A Flock of Seagulls, but fortunately what they did do is create some truly imaginative music. The band will also perform a special live streamed show from London’s Indigo at The O2 on October 24th – set to raise money and awareness for their crew, whose livelihoods have been so affected in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic.I listened to 1988's Best of OMD today and must say it always floors me what an awesome set of songs it contains. Lyrically detailing the atomic bombing on Hiroshima during World War II by the B29 Superfortress aircraft, the song scored a UK Top 10 on the singles charts and went on to become an international success, selling more than 5 million copies worldwide and ingraining itself as a synth pop classic and arguably OMD’s signature track. Recorded at Ridge Farm Studios in Dorking, and released on September 26th, 1980, ‘Enola Gay’ was the only single from the band’s second studio album ‘Organisation’.
